WORLD SERIES GAME 1 - Florida 11 vs. Virginia 7

Date: Monday, July 27 Location: Osceola Park #2 Time: 8:00am
Stingrays '96
vs. West Pines (Florida)
The Stingrays were 6 inches away from winning their opener against Florida, but ended up losing 11-7 in extra innings.  Florida jumped on top 2-0 in the top of the 1st, but the Stingrays battled back with 3 runs in the bottom of the inning - the first as Martin beat out an infield hit. Florida scored 3 times in the 2nd and the Stingrays came back again with 3 runs of their own (2 on a Hulette double over the left fielder) to lead 6-5.  Florida tied the game up and the Stingrays had their chance as time expired with the bases loaded.  Hotter's slap trickled foul as the would-be tying run crossed the plate.

The game went to extra innings using the International Tie Breaker, however, the Rays could not match Florida's run production in the extra inning, falling 11-7. Clements doubled in the only run for the Stingrays in the extra inning.

WORLD SERIES GAME 2 - Texas 13 vs. Virginia 2

Date: Tuesday, July 28 Location: Disney Wide World of Sports Time: 3:15pm
Stingrays '96 )
vs.
Mizuno Chaos (Texas)

The Stingrays could not get untracked and played a rather sloppy game in the stifling heat at Disney. Hendrix pitched a solid game but Texas was able to put the ball in play and the Stingray defense could not respond. Patterson had 2 hits including a double. Hulette had a towering triple that nearly cleared the fence and Clements also had a big double.

WORLD SERIES GAME 3 - Virginia 3 vs. Indiana 2

Date: Tuesday, July 28 Location: Disney - Wide World of Sports - Champions Stadium (Broadcast Live) Time: 6:45pm
Stingrays '96
vs.
Brats with Bats (Indiana)

Rakowski scored the winning run on a passed ball as the Stingrays defeated Indiana (#4 seed in the tournament) 3-2 in an excellently played game by both teams.  Emma started the inning by being hit by a pitch. Hotter hit a perfect slap to set up runners at 1st and 2nd with no outs. Patterson advanced both of the runners with a perfect sacrifice bunt.  With 2 outs, Rakowski slid home under the tag to set off a wild celebration by the Stingrays in the Internet broadcast game played in Champions Stadium.

The Stingrays defense showed up and made several outstanding plays. Martin pitched a masterful game, throwing off the Indiana batters and striking out 9 in 6 innings. Clements was solid behind the plate and gunned down 2 Indiana runners to stop rallies. Patterson made a great stab of a sinking line drive to save at least 2 runs and end an inning.

Hendrix drove in the 1st run with a solid single to left with 2 outs. Hulette had a towering double and was driven in by Clements .

WORLD SERIES ELIMINATION ROUND - Pennsylvania 4 vs. Virginia 2

Date: Wednesday, July 29 Location: Disney - Osceola Time: 1:30 pm
Stingrays '96
vs. Chaos Black (Pennsylvania)
The Stingrays took an early 2-0 lead and threatened to blow the game open in the 1st but couldn't get that key hit.  A close 2-2 game ended in a 4-2 loss for the Stingrays on a fluke single late in the game. Hendrix pitched a solid game but it wasn't enough to stay in the winner's bracket. Hotter led off the game with a nice slap single and was sent to 2nd on Patterson's single up the middle,  Consecutive walks scored Hotter before the 1st out was made. Hulette scored on a "unusual" steal of home, but that was all the Rays could get in the 1st.  PA tied it up in the 3rd on a couple of infield hits.  In the 5th inning, PA loaded the bases and with 2 outs had a Texas Leaguer score the deciding runs of the game.  The Rays final batter grounded out as time expired. O'Brien had a great game at 3rd, and Wagner and Jackwood made nice plays in the outfield.  Martin had a long double in a pitch hitting role.

The loss sent the Stingrays into the Loser's Bracket.

WORLD SERIES ELIMINATION ROUND - Maryland 3 vs. Virginia 0

Date: Wednesday, July 29 Location: Disney - Osceola Time: 1:30 pm
Stingrays '96
vs.
Churchville Lightning (Maryland)

The Stingrays ended their World Series with a tight 3-0 loss to a strong Maryland team.  Facing the best pitcher that they saw in the Series (or maybe even for the year), the Stingrays usually strong bats could not get untracked. Patterson had the only hit for the Rays and although they got 3 runners to 3rd, they could not get one across the plate.  The game was 1-0 for 3 innings and then Maryland scored 2 for the final runs of the game. Rakowski had a nice catch in center field, O'Brien made several plays at 3rd and was helped by the usual strong middle infield of Patterson and Hotter. Clements kept Maryland from even getting leadoffs with her outstanding strong arm. Martin pitched well in the loss and had several nice defensive plays herself.
Stingrays were the lone team to represent Virginia for the 2nd consecutive year.  This year, they were in every game (except for 1 defensive meltdown) and had several opportunities to win those games in the final at bat.  GREAT YEAR GIRLS!!!
