WORLD SERIES GAME 1 (Stingrays vs. Missouri)

Date: Sunday, July 17 Location: Fortune Park
Stingrays  - 14
vs. SWMO Team Boombah - 0 Pool Play D

The Stingrays showed why they are ranked 4th overall in the tournament. The only thing that went wrong in this game was the coin toss. Jocelyn started the game by forcing the 3rd baseman into making a bad throw with her blazing speed and as usual never stopped until she reached 2nd base. She went to 3rd on a wild pitch and 2 pitches later Rebecca set down a perfect suicide squeeze. 1-0 Stingrays with no outs. Two batters later Ann Marie stepped in and hit a 2 run bomb over the left center field fence. This was the Stingrays 1st over the fence HR in a World Series. That was all Tess needed, the bottom of the 1st went the same way as most of the game 1-2-3. Tess only let 1 ball reach the outfield and only 1 runner on 2nd base. Colleen led the defense with 3 put outs.

 Hits: Jocelyn – 1 single, 1 RBI; Rebecca - 2 singles, 1 RBI; Katy – 2 singles, 1 RBI; Haley - 1 single, 1 RBI; Ann Marie - 1 HR, 1 single, 4 RBI; Kelsey - 1 single, 1 RBI; Colleen - 1 triple; Bailey - 1 single; Shelby - 1 single.

 11 Hits, 14 Runs, 0 LOB

Pitchers: Tess 1-0, 1 Hit, 4 K's, 0 Walks

WORLD SERIES GAME 2 (Stingrays vs. Connecticut)

Date: Monday, July 18 Location: Disney Wide World of Sports
Stingrays  - 5
vs. Connecticut Seahawks - 4 Pool Play D
This game started pretty slow for the Stingrays. Connecticut took a early 1-0 lead with 2 hits. The Stingrays were only able to get 1 hit in the first two innings, the 3rd started the same way with 2 quick outs. Lauren stepped in with two outs and ripped a single to left field. Jocelyn singled and they moved to 2nd and 3rd on a wild pitch. Rebecca came up and hit a hard single up the middle to score two and put the Stingrays in the lead. Katy knocked Rebecca in with a deep single to right center. Connecticut scored a run in the bottom of the inning to keep the game close at 3-2 Stingrays. Connecticut tied the game in the 5th with another rope single by there #3 hitter, she hit everything we threw at her. The Stingrays just had some bad luck in the middle innings with 2 line drive double plays to keep them from taking the lead. Connecticut took the lead in the top of the 7th on a hard Florida hop that went to the fence. Not looking good for the team from Virginia, Connecticut has runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs and the Connecticut #3 hitter up. Rebecca enters the game and strikes out the Connecticut batter on a low full count change-up. The ball spins away from Haley but she still manages to get the runner at 1st, unfortunately the runner at 3rd scored. Stingrays down by 1 with 1 out and a runner at 3rd base. The next batter hits a fly ball to Ann Marie in left field, runner at 3rd tags up and Ann Marie throws a bullet to Haley at the plate, Haley tags the runner out and rolls the ball to the mound. The Stingrays will not go away. Tess starts the inning with hard single, tying run on 1st no outs. Kelsey bunts her to 2nd perfectly and now the fun starts. Colleen hits a hard sinking line drive to right that the fielder catches and throws to 2nd trying to get Tess diving back to the bag. Courtney up tying run at 2nd, 2 outs. Courtney drives a hard shot to right center that was hit so hard the center fielder couldn't stop it from rolling to the fence. Courtney on 3rd game tied 2 outs. Lauren steps in already 2 for 2 and pretty much owning the Connecticut pitcher. Lauren goes to a 2-2 count before she gets her 3rd hit of the game to drive in the winning run from 3rd. Stingrays win 5-4.

Hits: Jocelyn – 2 singles, Rebecca - 1 single, 2 RBI; Katy – 1 single, 1 double, 1 RBI; Miller - 1 single; Courtney - 1 triple, 1 RBI; Lauren - 3 singles, 1 RBI.

 10 Hits, 5 Runs

WORLD SERIES GAME 3 (Stingrays vs. California)

Date: Monday, July 18 Location: Disney Wide World of Sports
Stingrays  - 7
vs. So. Cal Diamonds - 3 Pool Play D

The Stingrays pick up where they left off in this game. The Stingrays in there first must win game of the World Series go right to work. Rebecca starts the game on the mound and works fast through the first 4 innings facing only 15 batters and giving up no runs. The Stingrays offense started right away. Jocelyn led off with a infield single, Amanda followed with a bunt single that she pushed to 2nd. The California team forgot about Jocelyn at 3rd, threw the ball to 2nd than back to home, after 2 throws and the ball never leaving the infield, Stingrays 1-0 runner at 2nd no outs. Katy draws a walk and Ann Marie does what she has been doing all year, blast down the 3rd base line for a triple and 2 RBI's. Tess comes up and executes the squeeze to push Ann Marie across, 4-0 Stingrays. That was really all the Stingrays needed against the California team. Rebecca pitched 5 innings and Tess finished the game in the 6th. A couple key defensive plays kept the California girls from ever getting back in the game. Courtney picked up a hard line drive base hit in right and threw out the runner at 2nd. Ann Marie ran down a long fly ball on the left field line to squash all hopes for the California team. Stingrays win again to finish 1st in their pool for the first time ever in a World Series.

WORLD SERIES GAME 4 (Stingrays vs. Pennsylvania)

Date: Thursday, July 21 Location: Disney Wide World of Sports
Stingrays  - 5
vs. Lower Buck Lady Lions - 4 Bracket Play

The Stingrays win in ITB. This game was an 8 inning marathon. The Stingrays started the game by giving Pennsylvania some hope by letting them score 2 unearned runs in the first. The bats for the Stingrays didn't show up at all for this game. Down 2-0 in the 3rd, the Stingrays were finally able to push Kelsey across the plate on a Jocelyn bunt. In the top of the 4th, Pennsylvania came right back with 2 more runs to put them in control at 4-1. In the bottom of the inning, Ann Marie led off with a single and Tess moved her to 2nd with a bunt. Kelsey singled to put runners at 1st and 3rd with 1 out. Colleen hit a slow roller to 2nd that scored the alert Ann Marie. Pennsylvania 4-2. Lauren came in to pitch in the 5th and shut down the Pennsylvania team pretty quick after a lead off error to put a runner at 3rd with no outs. That's where that runner stayed and was the difference in the game. The bottom of the 5th, Jocelyn led off with a single, Rebecca set down a bunt single and the 3rd baseman made a desperation throw that scored Jocelyn and put Rebecca on 3rd. Katy knocked Rebecca in with a single to center. Stingrays tie the game 4-4. Lauren pitched 3 scoreless innings in ITB to give the Stingrays a chance after failing to push any across in the the 6th and 7th. In the 8th after Lauren struck out the side, Jocelyn knocked in Lauren on an infield single when the 3rd baseman bobbled the ball just enough for Jocelyn to be safe at 1st. Game over Stingrays 5-4.

 9 Hits, 5 Runs

WORLD SERIES GAME 5 (Stingrays vs. Florida)

Date: Friday, July 22 Location: Fortune Park
Stingrays  - 14
vs. Jacksonville Storm - 0 Bracket Play

It was time for the Stingrays to play a Florida team. This game worried the coaches for two reasons. It was a Florida team and a early 8:00 am game, but it was no big deal to the Stingrays. The game started late due to a rain delay from the night before. The Stingrays started the game with a walk to Jocelyn, Rebecca put down a sacrifice bunt that Jocelyn pushed to third. Katy dropped down the perfect suicide 1-0 Stingrays. Ann Marie singled and went to 2nd on an error. Haley walked bases loaded. The runners advanced on a wild pitch. Tess puts down the 2nd squeeze of the inning Stingrays 5-0 after 1. Rebecca struck out 3 in the bottom of the 1st inning. The Florida team could never get on track. Courtney doubled in the 2nd, scored on a Jocelyn single. The Stingrays added six more in the 5th inning that put Florida to sleep. Colleen led the offense with 2 hits and 3 RBI. Rebecca pitched 5 shut out innings giving up only 3 hits.

Hits: Jocelyn – 2 singles, Rebecca - 1 single, 2 RBI; Katy - 1 single, 1 RBI; Ann Marie - 3 singles, 1 RBI; Tess - 1 single: Kelsey - 1 single; Colleen - 1 Single, 1 Double, 3 RBI; Courtney - 1 Double;

 12 Hits, 14 Runs

WORLD SERIES GAME 6 (Stingrays vs. Washington State)

Date: Friday, July 22 Location: Fortune Park
Stingrays  - 6
vs. Washington Titan - 3 Bracket Play

This game started Friday at 1:15 pm and ended Saturday at 9:00 am. Lauren started the game on Friday with 2 quick strike outs. The Titans number 3 batter hit a single and the lightning alarm sounded. Welcome to Florida. The teams were told to stay in the concrete dug-outs and wait for the all clear. We had one all clear, took the field and the lightning alarm went off again. Finally at 6:00 pm the rain let up enough for the Stingrays to hid to the cars. The game was postponed until 7:30 am on Saturday. The Stingrays came out ready to play. I guess the Titans forgot we had Haley behind the plate and tried to steal on the first pitch of the morning, Amanda tagged the runner out by 3 steps and tossed the ball to the ump. Bottom of the first Jocelyn and Rebecca single. Katy drops down another perfectly executed squeeze and the Stingrays are up 2-0. The Titans score 2 in the 2nd and 1 in the 3rd on a solo HR. The Stingrays take the lead back in the 3rd with walks by Katy, Tess and Kelsey. The Titans try a little small ball of there own in the 4th, but after a runner bounces off of Kelsey at 1st, they decided to stop. The Stingrays score runs in the 4th and 5th to keep the Titans away. Lauren strikes out the side in the 5th and Rebecca finishes in the 6th with 2 of her own.

WORLD SERIES GAME 7 (Stingrays vs. Kentucky)

Date: Saturday, July 23 Location: Fortune Park
Stingrays  - 1
vs. Kentucky Rockers - 7 Bracket Play

The Stingrays went into the winners bracket semis as one of only two teams not to have lost in the World Series.  Kentucky was able to turn a single and a couple of ground outs into a 1-0 lead after one.  The Stingrays came back in the 2nd to tie it up when they were able to push Shelby around on a sac bunt from Tess and a Kentucky error on a hard hit from Colleen.  But the 5am wakeup call finally caught up to the Stingrays as they allowed 4 unearned runs in the 3rd.  2 more runs in the 4th for Kentucky put the game out of reach. Tess pitched well allowing only 3 earned runs, but had no offense to help her out.  Only Katie and Jocelyn were able to get hits in the 7-1 loss.

WORLD SERIES GAME 8 (Stingrays vs. New Jersey)

Date: Saturday, July 23 Location: Fortune Park
Stingrays  - 2
vs. New Jersey Xplosion - 1 Bracket Play

Playing in their 3rd game of the day (after their 2nd consecutive 5am wakeup call), the Stingrays could have packed it in and headed to the pool. Instead, they realized that a win would send them to the Series Final Four – a goal far further than the Top 10 which was considered a stretch only a week ago.  After 2 scoreless innings, Rebecca again held NJ off balance in the top of 3rd.  Colleen started the bottom of the inning with a single and was sacrificed to second by Courtney. With 2 outs and Colleen on 2nd, Jocelyn beat out a slap hit that kept the inning alive and put runners at 1st and 3rd.   Rebecca then hit a grounder to 3rd and the third baseman’s hurried throw got past 1st allowing Colleen and Jocelyn to score to get a 2-0 lead for the Rays.  New Jersey could only come up with 1 unearned run in the 5th but were still in the game with the tie and winning runs on base in the 6th and last inning.  Ground ball to Kelsey, flip to Katie – game over and Stingrays in the Final Four!!  Rebecca earned her 4th win (along with a save) against no losses and struck out six.

WORLD SERIES GAME 9 (Stingrays vs. Kentucky)

Date: Saturday, July 23 Location: Fortune Park
Stingrays  - 0
vs. Kentucky Outrage - 7 Bracket Play

Playing in game 4 of the day and knowing that there were potentially 4 games still to play on later that Saturday, a tired, but determined Stingray team played Kentucky tough for a couple of innings behind Lauren. Throw out the wild 3rd inning (where “thrown out” was the phrase of the inning) and the game might still be going on. The Stingrays could never get on track offensively as they hit everything right at the defense.  In the 3rd, Kentucky was able to have a big inning but with all runs unearned.  3 uncharacteristic errors gave Kentucky a chance to play small ball game.  A very close play at home almost stopped them in their tracks, but it wasn’t meant to be. Then another bunt, and a quick play by Katy got the Kentucky runner at home.  During the play, Haley was hit by a wild bat and was down.  Things got heated at that point and the Kentucky coach was ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct – but the damage was done.  Kentucky scored all 7 of their runs (unearned) in that inning and the game ended 7-0 against the Stingrays.

Virginia Stingrays Finish in the Final 4 of the World Series 7-2

At first, the reality of the loss and being knocked out of the Series was a damper. But it didn’t take the team long to realize that they had completed a fantastic run and finished in the top Four!

Wins against Missouri, Connecticut, California, Pennsylvania, Florida, Washington and New Jersey proved that the Stingrays were a force to be reckoned with and that Virginia softball was nothing to be taken lightly.  Solid defense, extremely strong pitching, timely hitting, small ball and a commitment to the team are a formula hard to beat.  Every girl contributed, offensively (every player had at least 1 hit), defensively, pitching, catching and with lively spirit from girls not even in the game at the time.  A long, but extremely successful 8 day marathon was over

 FINAL FOUR and POOL TIME!
